29.1 Understanding the Purpose of Music Videos
The Purpose of Music Videos
Singers are doing music videos to get more audience on their songs
and to get more people to download it on other platforms. They also do it
to explain the meaning of their songs, so the audience understand
what they want to tell them. And of course, the artist gets more
popular and get his hits on the top one. A good music video can
make it happen that it will be remembered. The labels always tried to work
together with MTV, so the videos of the artist, who are under contract with
them will be played on the TV.
An
artist can release it songs together with a label, to get his music to Spotify,
Apple Music, etc. When you don't want to pay for this you can release a song on
SoundCloud for free. Some artist set up a pre-order before they release their
album, so the album already gets attention before it's even released. Once the
album has been published, it also includes relevant music videos for some
songs. The artists promote their songs on social media, for example on
Instagram. Sometimes artist support each other, by promoting each other’s
songs.
Some artist also does product placements in their music videos, so
they get paid from the company which they apply.
The new single ‘’Highest in the room’’ from Travis Scott is the
perfect example of promoting a song. Before it was released, he promoted it on
social media, for example on Instagram. Some people got advertistings between the Instagram stories with short impressions from the music video. The producers are OZ and Nik D. OZ is a German producer, so the
song got famous really fast in Germany and not just in America.
For promoting a whole album, the artist first releases a few songs, which will be on the album, so the audience want to hear more from the artist and when the album comes out, they listen to it directly. Some artist publishes a preview or snippet before the whole album comes out, in other words, the audience can already listen to parts of the songs before the album is released. That ensures that the people will download the whole album after that.
Such as Seeed with the album Bam Bam. The preview came out 6th
September 2019 and the album on 4th October 2019.
For
new artists, it is harder to get more clicks and get on the charts. If you
want to become famous, then you should work with a label. It can
be expensive, but they will get your music on Spotify,
apple music, etc.
For example, Billie Eilish. She released her first music video, Ocean Eyes, on 24th March 2016. In the music video you can see her singing in purple smoke.
The song went viral and she got many requestions from different labels to work with them.
When
two areas of media work together, then it is called synergy. For example,
when a song is used in a film, then the song will get more attention because of
the film and people who like the song want to watch the film, for which
the song was made. As
you can see in the song Boom Clap from Charli XCX. It was used in the film The
Fault in our Stars. You can find many film
scenes in the music video on YouTube. It was released at the 2nd
June 2014, the film came out 2 weeks later on the 19th.
A label can make you get international attention. They have very good financial resources and connections to television, radio, the media, advertising and PR professionals. They can even make sure, that your music is on popular playlists.

The record label helps the artist to increase his income, by selling the music video to different companies. Then the company is using the video in their advertising. Sometimes they just use the song and not parts of the videos. For example the pepsi advertising in the year 1987 with Michael Jackson. There are a few versions with different kids. One version is with Michael Jackson dancing in it. He comes into the video with his friends and meet a boy and his friends and they dance together. While they are dancing the boy is drinking a pepsi.
The second advertising is with cutouts of a concert by Michael Jackson. The people in the crowd are drinking pepsi.
The advertising will then be in youtube videos or on TV. As a result, more people get to know the song and connect the song to the advertising, which ensures that they will think of pepsi when they hear the song.
